Editorial evaluation policy

Peer review

Sextant adheres fully to the principle of peer review, which guarantees the integrity of scientific research and its publications. Sextant welcomes unpublished articles only; although exceptions may be made for translations; if so, the reference to the original publication of the article is always mentioned in the version published by Sextant.

Thematic issue

Each thematic issue is placed under the scientific responsibility of a researcher, who ensures the scientific coordination of the issue. He or she sends the Editorial Board a presentation of the proposed thematic issue (consisting of a one- to two-page argument with indicative bibliography and of a table of contents). The proposal is read and evaluated by the management and the Editorial Board, who collectively decide on the appropriateness of publication. A call for contributions is issued. Prospective authors send a presentation of their article (maximum 300 words) and a short biography (brief CV and description of research areas, maximum 5 lines), in French or English. The scientific quality and relevance of the proposal to the theme of the dossier will be assessed by the coordinator of the thematic issue.

Double-blind evaluation process

All articles submitted to Sextant undergo a double-blind evaluation process. The identity of the author is not communicated to the reviewers; conversely, authors are not informed of the identity of the reviewers. Reviewers are chosen by the journal's management and editorial secretariat, with the help of members of the editorial board and the reading committee. At least one of the two reviewers must belong to a university/research institute outside French-speaking Belgium. Reviewers are chosen on the basis of their research expertise, and are appointed in such a way as to avoid any conflict of interest arising from personal or professional collaborations with the authors whose manuscripts they are reviewing. They are committed to confidentiality and respect for the authors’ intellectual property. Articles are reviewed within two months. On the basis of blind reviews, the journal’s management decide whether the article is accepted as such, accepted with minor modifications, accepted with major modifications (with a new assessment) or rejected. Contentious cases are dealt with by the management and editorial board. Only the management and editorial secretariat are authorized to communicate the results of the review to the authors.
