This volume, entitled Of Augustian Fame: Local Personalities from Antiquity to the Present Day, is the fruit of a colloquium organized by the young researchers of the Centre d’Histoire : “Espaces et Cultures” at the University of Clermont Auvergne. It seeks to understand the position and role of various "personalities" at the local level: medieval preachers, politicians, industrialists, and merchants, all of whom organized social forums and generated archival sources written either to praise or to criticize them. The articles in this volume question the foundations of the local recognition of these individuals through the analysis and criticism of available sources, by illuminating the networks and cultural transfers generated by these personalities, and finally, through an analysis of the memorial or historical posterity of these figures who were able either to acquire lasting renown or fall into oblivion.
