Major events

  • The Center of Critical Theory of Shanghai University and The Interdisciplinary Research Center of Communication Science of the University of Turin signed an agreement for approving the establishment of Shanghai-Turin Semiotic Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Cultures (SILC) on Jan 7, 2019. SILC is jointly managed by Professor Massimo Leone (adjunct professor of Shanghai University) and Professor Zeng Jun of Shanghai University.

  • Tongji Institute of Linguistics and Multimodality (TILM) was established at Tongji University.

  • SILC joined the Chinese Semiotics Base alliance.

  • Tongji Institute of Linguistics and Multimodality joined the Chinese Semiotics Base alliance.

  • The 7th National Summit Forum on Language and Semiotics was held in Anhui Normal University, from November 1st to November 3rd, 2019.

  • The Research Center for Contrastive Semiotics was founded in Anhui Normal University, on November 2nd, 2019.

Seminars & workshops

  • On May 3rd, 2019, the “Workshop of Cultural Semiotics” was held by Shanghai-Turin Semiotic Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Cultures (SILC), discussing semiotics in urban discourse, landscape and memory in China and the West.

  • A Semiotics Salon, and a lecture with the title Chinese Philosophy from the Perspective of Semiotics by Associate Professor Shuo Zhang, took place in Northwest Normal University (NWNU) on April 12th, 2019.

  • A Semiotics Salon, and a lecture with the title Back to the Presence of the Body: The Trans-Language Semiotic Logic of Sino-culture Communication by Associate Professor Hong Li, took place in Northwest Normal University (NWNU) on April 19th, 2019.

  • From July 1st to July 3rd, 2019, the international conference “Semiotics of Cultural Heritage” was held by European Research Council (ERC), International Association for Semiotic Studies (IASS) and Shanghai-Turin Semiotic Interdisciplinary Laboratory on Cultures (SILC).

  • On August 24th-25th, 2019, the Seminar on Culture and Semiotics of Communication was held in Guilin, Guangxi Province.

  • A Semiotics Salon, and a lecture with the title The Trans-Language Semiotic Logic of Sino-culture Communication by Associate Professor Shuping Zhang from Lanzhou City College, took place in Northwest Normal University (NWNU) on October 17th, 2019.

  • A school-level seminar on corpus semiotics, media semiotics, edusemiotics, and semiotics of translations, was organized by the Digital Humanities Team (DHT) and hosted by Professor Jian Luo as academic lead of the team in Anhui Normal University on November 29th, 2019.

  • A Semiotics Salon, and a lecture with the title From Perception to Cognition: Philosophical Semiotics of Meaningful World by Professor Yirong Hu from Sichuan University, took place in Northwest Normal University (NWNU) on November 29th, 2019.

  • In November, 2019, to introduce multimodal semiotics and pathological semiotics studies, Tongji Institute of Linguistics and Multimodality organized an innovation workshop entitled as “Innovation X Plan: Language and Medicine” at Tongji University, which attracted many students to join in the discussion.

  • A research center-level seminar on contrastive semiotics, and a lecture with the title On the Intersubjective FLT Model, delivered by Professor Yongxiang Wang, took place in Anhui Normal University on December 6th, 2019.

Enrollment

1The Research Center for Linguistic Semiotics in Tianjin Foreign Studies University enrolled 2 postgraduates majoring in semiotics, currently having 8 postgraduate students.

Courses

2General linguistics, semiotics, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and stylistics courses are offered for MA students at Anhui Normal University.

3General linguistics, Introduction to Discourse Studies, and Methods and Schools of Critical Discourse Analysis are offered for MA students at Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

4Semiotics is taught by Professor Jin Cao and Doctor Shiqiang Jiang as a course for postgraduates in NWNU.

5Semiotics and Daily Life is a liberal arts course taught by Professor Jin Cao for undergraduates in NWNU.
