Lyon doit à l’association de Barthélemy Buyer et de Guillaume Le Roy, un riche marchand lyonnais et un typographe liégeois, d’être la seconde ville du royaume de France où s’installe l’imprimerie juste après Paris. Depuis la fin du xixe siècle, c’est en effet le Compendium breve du cardinal Lothaire, avec leurs deux noms au colophon, qui s’impose comme la plus ancienne impression avec date de la cité rhodanienne. Les premiers travaux bibliographiques écartent alors les hypothèses les plus fantaisistes qui faisaient remonter aux années 1460 l’arrivée de la nouvelle industrie à Lyon. Reprenant les précieuses découvertes de Natalis Rondot, Anatole Claudin présente au tout début du xxe siècle dans son importante Histoire de l’imprimerie française la production de Buyer et Le Roy ainsi que des éléments de leur biographie. Guillaume Le Roy, prototypographe lyonnais
Abstract
A century after Anatole Claudin’s Histoire de l’imprimerie française, this study revisits the biography of Guillaume Le Roy, the first printer of Lyon, drawing on known editions and archival documentation. It introduces new evidence and hypotheses concerning the relationship between Barthélemy Buyer and Guillaume Le Roy, as well as the latter’s eventual move toward independence. Indeed, it appears that Le Roy remained with the Buyer family for several years after Barthélemy’s death, before establishing himself in two different residences until his own death, the exact date of which remains unknown. The final years of his life – following the publication of his last known edition – remain obscure, as does his trajectory prior to his arrival in Lyon. The end of his printing career appears, in any case, to have been particularly bleak, marked by a swift bankruptcy around 1492 following a period of financial success during the 1480s. Over the course of his career, he employed various typographic types, which allow for a rough chronological classification of his output. His editorial policy – initially likely directed by Barthélemy Buyer – also evolved, with a progressively greater diversification of his production.
