A poem: 船鍍 (Chinese version) - Ferry crossing (English version, Translation by Jacqueline Leung)

(Chinese version)
Ferry crossing (English version)
3The pier is empty, history resting
on a page, the waves are gentle this time, crests
stretched like a thousand arms in fleeting
first daybreak to retrieve
trifles of fragmented gold.
The sky is also empty, been waiting
to blanket the world, set forth the end
of itself and all there is—
bliss.
But no, the ferry comes again
mother ship slicing through legion waves
It is on time, having gathered the day’s
dwindling plans, cleansing by water
flushed into the past, past as with its name
like years of scheduled sailings, a little late sometimes,
with joy dread fear compassion, or
the unwitnessed birth and wither of trees
all manifesting as
words of declaration.
I am declared, board my return
at 9:28 p.m.—
into the belly of the dark, three days three nights,
far licks of fire, someone waves from the hills,
everything you wished for will come true. Over there
lies hopes and dreams equality freedom
houses to stretch in parks to run across,
you can toil and build share and bear a brand new self
give back to people you hold dear
that land will burn forever,
inextinguishable as hell and hell’s children.
But that land
goes further off course with unjust turns,
shadows on shadows far as the eyes can see
from the desolate city
the ferry sails into the nightunder time's cover and stray stars, hillside criesbreaking like static on old radio
wisp of song drifting out to sea—
Back on my island, I gather
dry skirts and flags, stew
star trails from last night’s picking
only to find tinges of night and fire
coating my shoulder.
I see myself in the infinite crests
of tomorrow’s waves,
braving remains of the sun’s apocalyptic heat
shatter anew with splash that fling themselves
at ferries before sinking into the sea
the sea, it rolls, comes back again
